King Khan at The Corner

Wednesday 2nd of June, $35, $4 pots of Draught.

Woollen Kits
As you can see in the above picture the Corner now has a security fence.

Royal Headache

Last time King Khan came to Australia it was King Khan & the Shrines, which I would assume was bigger than the two piece that was playing tonight. Did enjoy the covers at the start then I got a little bored towards the end. Great to see Melbournians are still packing out wid week gigs.

Ratatat

Ratatat, Qua and Worlds End Press(did not see) at the Corner Friday 15th, $30+BF

Qua was very hypnotic, 2 piece, Laptop, Synth, Electronic Drums and Sampler/Loop machine(I think)
Ratatat had some great guitar riffs and visuals, with plenty of electronic beats and samples.
I was up the front for most of it, but couldn’t stand it, seams that all the f*** heads are up the front, they tend to get a little overexcited, pushy, violent to others, and all the mellow people who would like to have a non intrusive dance stand up the back.

Not the Human League

Harlequin League - Bones

I often dream at night and wish there would be a band that would come out and be as cool as the Human League in Melbourne town, but alas this will never happen. But when I see the words Synth in a lineup of instruments I'll take a second look. The Harlequin League have a Synth in the lineup, and upon loading there myspace page you are greeted with a track called Again and Again, which may get the kids dancing along to this Synth/Rock Tune, but skip this tracks and listen to Itchy Heart which is much more of a catchier tune and some experimental aliments. I can hear some sounds that remind me of the likes of Stone Roses, Janes Addiction and even a modern act Kasabian (but they don't have the big sound like them). The above track is a little strong but still worth a listen.

They also have a gig coming up at the Corner also with End Of Fashion & The Seabellies on this Friday 5th September.

My Disco + Fabulous Diamonds & kes(with band)

The Corner 22/3 MY DISCO!(space) (album launch) + Fabulous Diamonds & kes(with band). $10+BF.

Fabulous Diamonds

Fabulous Diamonds had some interesting instrumentals but I didn't care much for the singing, was a bit for the sake of singing trendy (that does that make sense).

Kes is always interesting to see, last time was at the Tote where he played a solo show, plenty of psych riffs to take you off this planet. With a band its the next level, plenty of layers and locals. There were even some more poppy tracks, which reminded me of where I first herd Kes on a Unstable Ape sampler (do they still exist?). Also if any one knows was he part of the Bird Blobs?

My Disco

Last time I saw My Disco was at the Arthouse with the likes of Envy, Brisk and Art Vandelay. which was a quite a different style of gig with more harder edge bands. I just can't pin My Disco down as they can fit anywhere. Sometimes they are Punk, Experimental Guitar, hints of Metal and even a whisper of Indie. What I like about this band is that the whole sound and performance is very hypnotic and addictive, proving that sometimes something so minimal can open new part of the imagination.

COCOROSIE

COCOROSIE
Thu 6 Mar Doors
$38+BF The Corner

As the sands of the hour glass slip away, post can somehow get forgotten. I've seen a few gigs and updating can sometimes feel like a choir.

One more gig to post after this one.

From what I remember they're was a mix of young and old. Some people didn't know what to expect and some people must of been on some good drugs as they were bonkers with whatever nuts they were fed.

I was going to have a picture of a chair but am slack. At least I posted something.

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE

Broken Social Scene, Guests: Belles Will Ring

Sold out gig at the Corner, Doors: 8pm, $38

Didn't get to see Belles Will Ring, so wont say anything. The gig was early, With Broken Social Scene starting to play around 10.15pm. They started off with a nice instrumental, played a few tracks that I like off there album 'We hate your hate'(I think thats what it's called. But over all was a little bored. I guess have seen some awesome gigs recently you get spoilt and something that average becomes below average. The cool kids seem to enjoy it, people there seemed to be in there mid 20's some older types as well. Although the gig was a little disappointing I really dig there artwork.

I've linked the Arts and Crafts website, as there own is for members only, what with that.

THE NATIONAL + Gaslight Radio

THE NATIONAL (USA)11:10pm – 12:30am + Gaslight Radio(fan site)(space) 10pm & Ned Collette Band(space)which I didn't see) 9pm
The Corner SOLD OUT! Sat 19 Jan. $35+BF

This is a quick one before I even forget to enter this gig. Most things I rate from Bad to Ok to Good to Excellent. Now Ok is my medium, so when I say to someone that gig was Ok its just medium level and some people don’t understand this. From what I’ve heard of the National they are fairly mellow but on stage they seemed to crank it up a notch. I really got into the harmonies and use of violin and brass instruments. For a sold out gig it was good, I’d probably not see them again but for a fairly relaxed acted there are some crazy people there who just wanted to go off there head like they were seeing a punk band. I don’t get it.

Also I did catch the last couple of songs from
Gaslight Radio and did enjoy it.

Andrew Bird & Martin Dosh

Andrew Bird and Martin Dosh
The Corner, 11/1/08. Ticket $40.

Was a magical night. Martin Dosh played some solo work, which was layer over layer of samples some of which he created on the spot and some not. A little hard to see the man at work as he was sitting down for his performance. I think it went for about 40 minutes in total.

Martin Dosh - Hi Dive

I felt very special to see this performance, played quite a few tracks from his latest album Armchair Apocrypha, the live sound was very unique compare to the Album but no so distant you couldn't recognize it.

Built to Spill + Crayon Fields & Gareth Liddiard

Built to Spill(space) + Crayon Fields(space) & Gareth Liddiard
The Corner 29/12/2007, ticket $48, pots of draught beer $3.60

Crayon Fields played a sweet, crusy indie pop, great for a summer day.

Gareth Liddiard(I think he's the Lead singer of the Drones) solo act, playing haunting ballads and telling stories.

Built to Spill played a real dreamy gig with plenty of great guitar action. It was amazing that this relaxed band had a few crazy supporters in the crowd even one person who must of fainted near the stage, as the lead singer called for someone to give them a hand. Doug Martsch also thank the crowd for coming and mention how expensive it was, but how I see it was very cheep for an international gig these days.

14/6 Wanda Jackson

14/6
WANDA JACKSON (Space)+ HANKS JALOPY DEMONS (Hanks Space) +
FLYING SAUCERS
At the Corner

I feel bad saying it but the Flying Saucers had a cover band sound but had a fund vibe on stage and set the night for the Rockabilly extravaganza. The crowd was probably the oldest I've seen at the Corner, plus plenty of young kids who dressed up for the occasion (which looks a bit wanky)

Hanks Jalopy Demons were a perfect connection with the new and the old of Rockabilly, this band were very energetic, dancable and entertaining.

The show was a bit of a best of, with Wanda telling some of the stories along the way. Wanda managed to pull out a gospel song, with a few people in the crowd not happy, but she sang it amazingly regardless of what your beliefs are. Even though Wanda has aged psychically, her voice, to her voice was still intact and sounding very much of what I've heard from her CD's.

Also the backing for Wanda in her Australian tour was Itchy Fingers & Andrew King.

The night was cold, I found this out while deciding to walk home while leaving some friends to get a few CD's signed.

The Good Shepherd's Circus Pice Classic

The Good Shepherd's Circus Pice Classic
The Corner, Sunday 29th April

Felt before entering that such a event would be a bit dirty due to pubs with beer drenched carpet holding you in place and smoke of the punters (people still light up in gigs, just a little a bit more discrete , don't know how the ban coming up for all venues will be policed).

Bit of a sad event due to not many people being there for such a good cause. It'd seemed more of an event that should of taken place during summer, maybe outside in a park, or in a park with some festival.

The idea was great having a gig meets rock kwiz meets Iron Chef, but it just seemed very disjointed. If they are going to do this again maybe they should look at the Oyster eating on Australia day at the Belgian beer cafe, that thing is massive.

Also the price of Alcohol is to expensive

Hot Chip

Hot Chip, the Corner 30/01/2007

I want one of those keyboards in this clip, damn it they dont make them anymore.

Went to the Corner by myself (well shit happens) to watch a sold out gig by UK lads Hot Chip, with plenty of over flow from the Big Day Out. Cover watch Hot Chip did a little of new orders ‘Temptation’ and Fleetwood Macs ‘Everywhere’. The type of music was a very nerdy Indie / Electro dance / Pop, which most of the crowd moving. Songs were fairly seamless at the start, and then later they got a bit more talkative. Tunes were fairly constructed on the spot unlike some acts who replicate there album.

Midlake

Midlake + Art of Fighting, The Corner, 10th December 2006

I strolled into the Corner about half way through Art of fighting's set, some friends claim they are slow and borring, but I claim easygoing and picturesque.

Midlake (who I still think its funny they are from Texas) played a tight set, plenty of moving pictures behind them, recreating tracks sucessfully from there albums. Punters were young and old, maybe a few more girls than guys. Some people did walk out straight after they'd Played Rosco, which was a little sad, so much more to give.

Bellrays at the Corner

Friday 4th August 2006

Bellrays played for a solid one hour, non stop, no breaking, no tunning, no awkward silences. It was like a soul review but done in the form of rock, so you could call it a rock review, with some soul thrown in for good measure, plus the lead singer could really belt it out. For a packed corner you could have been mistaken for people coming just to see them, but later that night radio birdman played. If they had played there own headlining show in Melbourne I would of gone, but this was the only option, I was hoping for some secret special gig but didn’t happen to hear of anything.

As soon bell’s finished, all the hip kids wanted more, being realistic I left (Already seen radio birdman) and then I noticed an army leather clad old men started moving to the front.

I was told by a friend they also played to a quiet Hi Fi bar, also played a cover of an AC/DC song.

The Magic Numbers

The Magic Numbers, + Youth group & Riff Random
The Corner, Wed 1st Feb

The Magic Numbers played there sideshow, after playing at the Melbourne Big Day Out. The Corner was packed and instead of smelling of smoke, it was more like sweat and beer.

I didn't get there untill Youth Group were on. Call me a wanker or snob, whatever, I simply don't care for
Riff Random. Youth Group's lead singer Toby sang like he was making sex to the mike, but just could't make it. Last time I saw Youth Group was at a gig in 2004 at Ding Dong, where then they just seemed to rock out more.

Migac Numbers are from London, but have a sound that could fit very comfortably in the states. They have a experimental sound and melodic, like such other artists as the flaming lips and from the 60's a touch of the Mamas and Papas.

The two girls had very beutiful voices, Michele soft and Angela ever so sexy and sweet. Also was very pleased to find out that they weren't not pretentious gits. They did an interesting cover of Crazy in Love and finished it off with one of the longest ever outro's I have heard in a while.

SMOKE FREE SHOWS AT THE CORNER

The Corner has recently announced from December 2005 all shows will be smoke free. Plus a new bar and smoking area will be made upstairs. That should make things a bit cooler, instead of coming home smelling like smoke and beer, I'll just smell like beer.

The Go! Team at the Corner

29/07/2005

Go! Team, The grates and Mid state orange.

Mid State orange started the gig, they had an interesting sound but soon I was soon bored, they seemed a little flat. Then came The Grates which brought up the tempo for the evening and got everyone dancing. Well I didn’t, maybe because I feel a little old. I couldn’t believe the amount of energy that the lead singer has, she just kept on dancing around the stage, maybe on her imaginary trampoline.

It didn’t take long before The Go! Team jumped onto the stage. I was amazed the size of the Go! Team on the small corner stage, but I have seen the Cat Empire play there and they have a horn section. There live sound is very different to there records and would be something hard to replicate, but still came across as a party band. The active band got the dance floor moving, with the exception to the guy on bass (A guy Stereolab standing in).
At the end of the gig I turned to my friends and said “They should have had a live horn section”.

The Grates
