Sam Simmons

I saw this show the other day (Sam Simmons Space), had a good laugh. A very quirky show, although he does use power point, and some pic's have been seen before in emails. The picture is a bit messed up due to sitting in my pants for a few days. Also check out his webpage.
Also Sam is a guest on youth network JJJ for Top Shelf with Robbie Buck (rhyms with something doesn't it) Here's a couple of things to listen to...

Ding Dong Thursday 19th April
Rock and Roll is where I hide, this was a fairly quiet event, guys outnumbered the girls. Maybe the lack of punters was due to the Comedy Festival. I think there was another band that played but it was on the list (any help leave a comment).
Royal Saloon - Disco Man
Royal Saloon - Cool to Cruise
Royal Saloon - Stan Cash (Edit)
You can find your whole album here for download.

Renderers + Kes(solo) + Rowland S Howard

Renderers(NZ) + Kes(solo) + Rowland S Howard
The Tote, Thursday 12th April
I really enjoyed the Kes solo show, very laid back but went places, it sound like he was constructing songs on the spot. Rowland S Howard was very tight and very structured. I got distracted at the end when the Renderer's came on due to some very funny wanky talk but some b grade celebs out the back. The people at the show were very young and was surprised by this, expecting an older turn out.

Lawrence Leunge
A bit of a sidestep to a band gig, but comedy fest is on, people stand up and entertain you, like a band.
Lawrence Leunge (Trades Hall, 10/04/07) show is more about finding what is cool, than breakdanceing.
Although the breakdancing part is very good. should of been more of this.
Although he did think the Fonz is cool, but the Fonz isn't.
1. The Fonz lives with old people.
2. The Fonz hangs out with children
3. The Fonz has an office in a mens toilet

Pixies, Jarvis Cocker, Phoenix, The New York Dolls
(This Map shows where I was standing, very fair removed from the action, Imagine how bad it would of been from the back. I would of paid to paid the extra to get up the front or not paid anything at all, and listend outside.)
Pixies, Jarvis Cocker(Space), Phoenix, + The New York Dolls
Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Wednesday April 4th.
Ney york dolls & Phoenix played for 45 minutes each, Jarvis Cocker played just under an hour, and the Pixies closed the show went for about 1 hour and & minutes.
The event felt like an all ages with a great mix of ages, and had all your typical punters from your off your tits to the more sober. Ney York Dolls kick off at 6pm, which confused the punters (who weren't there) and also didn't impress the band too much either.
Was also very impressed by phoenix and the people who went to see them, as I didn't think so many people new them, and this also led to some people sing along not so well.
Jarvis Cocker also was good, but don't think his songs are as strong as his time in Pulp, He also didn't do as much banter as his also gig.
Pixies did a solid performance with only one stop at the start to get rid of a big ball going across the stage, as the Pixies don't do beach balls, then they had a little banter trying to get back to the right part where they left off.
Due to where I was standing (See picture) I felt very removed from all of the performance, this is one of the main problems with these stadium shows, and it was like watching it all on TV.

Bellrays second time around
Bellrays (space) + Breadmakers at the Spanish club Friday 2nd March 2007
Also Pink Fits were there too, but didn't catch them.
Entering it was cool with the air conditioning, but at the end it was sweating hot, even the walls were sweating.
breadmakers had a great 60's garage vibe.
Solid performance, one song after another, good tunes but no top selling hits.Where as good as last year, with a few more followers.
This is what I thought of them last time

Camera Obscura with Institut Polaire
Fri 23rd Feb - Northcote Social Club
Ca,era Obscura with Institut Polaire (Perth) and Bianca Natasha
SOLD OUT SHOW!
(It took me a while to write about this)
It was a sold out night at the Northcote Social Club, and stinking hot in the band room while outside was sweat the cool. Why, maybe the aircon wasn't working? But it always happens at this venue.
Did miss out on Bianca Natasha but you can listen to some of her stuff at her space.
Institut Polaire from Perth was very enthusiastic, maybe its a new band syndrome 'Fantastic to be here'. But still you want a band to perform not just play, and performed they did. Great sound for a big band with plenty of stuff going on, loved the trumpet and violen.
Institut Polaire - City Wall and Empires
(they played this track one of my favorites)
The crowd were fairly pumped to see camera obscura, including some people up the front that were going crazy to every song they played. 'Lets get out of this country' was on my Top album list for 2006, so I went into this gig with high expectations. They didn't perform they played but stood there looking very disinterested with being there, a lackluster performance. Although I did enjoy 'Lloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken' and the soul stomper 'If looks could Kill'. And I don't want to hear the 'they just got off the plane from Glasgow' no when your on stage perform, or my hard earned cash is going to waste. Well there the old man rant for the day.

Love is all
Love is All (space) + Shaky Hands/Cut off your hands
East Brunswick Club 28/2/07
Love is All - Talk Talk Talk Talk
This little write up thing, has taken a while, not because I had a problem with the gig just because I've been busy.
This was one of Love is Alls sides shows for that Laneway festival thing or lets pack in all these people and make them uncomfortable thingy.
Nice Venue, first time to see a gig there. Apart for the expensive beer. Went through this rabit warren from the bar into the venue, kind of had that feeling of not knowing what to expect.
The kids there, yes kids was a young crowd, were all dressed up looking the indie part, or what ever that was. I managed to catch Shakey hand or is it now Cut off your hands but not the first band. They had a great dance party vibe, warm up feeling, which suited waiting there for love is all. Love is all played a fairly short set, maybe under 1 hour, but I still enjoyed because 1. the band performed 2. had this great energy on stage, which made me not feel cheated buy the price. Sweedish Groups are sexy ABBA anyone? This band fits into that Sweedish Sexy mould.

Paper Planes

Paper Planes Sat 17th Feb, at the Cherry Bar
(space)
Was on a date with a lady, finding something to do, and endered up here. Cheap night $5 that's 1990's prices. Cherry was a good place for a gig, nice and intimate. Band was rock, remimded me of a few bands one Rival School, others have escaped me. Didn't see Tiger by the Tail due to my date falling asleep on me or was it that awkward kiss I tried to give her.
