Tru-Mould Warehouse Party

Assassins 88(myspace) were the first band up at the Tru-Mould Warehouse Party, and they are a fun party band, very noisy. The drummer in the back, who you can't really see in this pic, has tape on his mouth and was making some very static noisy vocals to great effect.

Outside people were having there BYO drinks and trying out a sausage from the BBQ.

Above Scott and Charlene’s wedding another pop band, but alot slower and complete chance from Assassins. BoomGates finished the gig off, it was way to packed to get a good pick in, as I was pushed up at the band. They are todays rave band, getting some good reviews from their recent Big Day Out performance, with a member of Eddy Current Suppression Ring. They did remind me of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, a little slower, with some female vocals.

Last pic shows the big crowd out the front, many people probably didn't get in, and plenty of the BYO bottles that had been used and tossed away.

The new band room is very cosy, although there there was trouble with the smell and sweat. The aircon was turned on but the window was still fogged up. Maybe this room could be on the nose come summer. However no poll in the middle of the room was great.

Marf Loaf two peice, great voice and excellent guitarist. Quoabe played some Gothic folk rock, guitar I could hear but his voice was a little muffled. Joseph Liddy and the Skeleton Horse, young band, had some loud rocking tunes mixed in with some quieter moments.

Royal Headache

Last time King Khan came to Australia it was King Khan & the Shrines, which I would assume was bigger than the two piece that was playing tonight. Did enjoy the covers at the start then I got a little bored towards the end. Great to see Melbournians are still packing out wid week gigs.

James McCann played half a set just instrumental and other half by himself plus his own vocals. His instrumentals are great, painting a picture with the use of a guitar. Play with him for the first half was Rui Pereira, who had an exhibition upstairs and also better known as guitarist in The Drones.

Jeffrey Lewis, Dick Diver and Woollen Kits at Northcote Social Club on the 9th of March 2010
 Didn't catch Woollen Kits, but Dick Diver and Jeffrey Lewis (and band) were great, very refreshing. Luckily no one was sitting down at this gig. I seen some of Jeffrey's work via a Tate Podcast, and was a great mix of music and slide show/performance art, telling stories.

Friday Night

 

 After having a drink at The Fox with the crew at PBSfm, the second stop of the night was at The Gem, watched the band above while drinking a pot of draught (I'll have to check Beat to find out who they are). Then it was off to Yah Yahs to see Hugo Race and The True Spirit play.

Managed to catch support Bad Orchestra(pictured above), but missed out on Celery. Very pleased to catch this band, plenty of guitar, taking you somewhere, with some great female vocals thrown in. Bad Orchestra is a band I would definitely see again and look forward to listening to an album, very dreamy. Spoke to two of the members of the band on the street and they said they had only been together for 6 months, but I thought that they were much tighter than a new act and seemed a little bit more together had some sort of direction, compared to alot of new acts.

Probably the best part of Hugo Race and The True Spirit was the trombone/percussionist (on the left of the picture). He was doing thing with a trumpet/trombone/harb/knobs on that thing that if never seen before.

One thing I didn't get about Yah Yah's this night was the crowd, felt like alot of the crowd weren't meant to be there, and may of been more comfortable in a club or bar on Chapel Street.

Yah Yah's on a Lazy Sunny Sunday (7/2/10) Free

Breadmakers above were a good band that suited the Yah Yah's crate diggers event, nice and dirty 60's garage rock. I went around 3pm, and Yah Yah's was packed with people digging through records, so packed I couldn't get in to have a look, hopefully they'll do this again.

Even though this is not the best picture, I like the guy on the right rocking out.

The School of Radiant Living

Yesterday I managed to catch the The School of Radiant Living at Front Bar Residency the Birmingham Hotel. 4 piece, has a sound that reminds me of something back in the early 90's. The Birmingham was busy, probably due to there Ska B Q they had out the back, or maybe it was due to the Tote not being open anymore.

The night started off at the Hi Fi for the Neko Case gig (the second show, the first was on Thursday). at $55 it was a good price for an international gig. Biggest complaint about the Hi Fi is that it's way too hot, I know the gig was full (sold out) but still every time I've been there, summer or winter the place is way too warm. Neko Case is a great performer, great harmonies and band. The sound was great, I could hear everything, even the pluck of the banjo and slide guitar. At the end of the gig she did a Heart cover Magic Man, and I did feel like yelling out 'now play barracuda'. Melbourne Bitter stubbies were $6.50.

Then we got to Eurotrash at around 12.15 to see Shunda K from Yo Majesty. This was my first time to see a gig here, it was a little strange walking up the sound proofed stairwell. Shunda played with a backing track but was very quick with her lyrics and could hardly tell when she was talking a break in between the rapping. Also the crowd for fairly young, with most of the crowd made up of Anglo Saxon Australians. When Shunda finished the placed went down hill, some spaced out guys on the dance floor and a quick getaway was required. It was well worth the $15.

Black Sorrows Rockin' Zydeco Christmas Party

Thornbury Theatre, Saturday December 12, $35 (I think)

Was a little disappointed as expected more Zydeco, talented Musicians, great PA at the Thornbury Theatre, and was also disappointed that I couldn't hear the slide guitar and accordion.

To tell you the truth I nearly forgot about this gig, and just realized I hadn't posted anything on it, as I really use this site to document gig I see in Melbourne. I didn't get to see Miniature Submarines(from Melbourne) so no comments on them, did see Panel of Judges but they did not hold my interested and left to talk to mates in the bar.

The crowd flooded in when the Vivian Girls started, full of all the young and trendies who inhabit Northcote. They did rock, some great moments of instrumentals, but why does this all feel like a dream, maybe I'm to occupied with other matters.

 

Dollsquad and The Gung Hoes at Yah Yah's

Dollsquad was very cool, with there rock, leather clad, all girl group, felt very fresh with comparison to Tim Rogers outfit The Gung Hoes. The Gung Hoes are made up of Tim Rogers, Davey Lane, Pete Satchell (Dallas Crane) and Evan Richards (Cold Harbour). Yah Yah's filled up with punters wanting to here Tim new outfit, although I know a few people that got bored and went across the road to see cool new kids play some new music (see the bellow poster).

Old and New

Did a little venue hop on Wednesday 9/9/09.

Bar Open had IN BETWEEN WORDS: readings & performances, covers of songs by The Triffids & David McComb. I this gig I managed to see Blackeyed Susans Trio and Single Men’s Drinking Club. Both were very good. Single Men's drinking Club did this great cover of a Triffids song that I don't know the name, but it started with spoken word then went all prog rock. The old problem I find with Bar Open is that there are too many seats, hard to walk around in the dark then bumping into one, and way too many people. I was sweating like it was 40c in summer and make it even more annoying people all around me were breaking wind, which made me run out of the Blackeyed Susans Trio to take cover.

After that went to the Birmingham and caught last song by Into the Woods and a full set by The Thod.
Later went to see the thod, young kids who have small turn outs to there gigs. This was the third time that I have seen them play, for a small venue the sound was good, a very much relaxed gig, with a few of the band members sitting on the tiny stage, also the princible tamorinist cracks me up with his campy banter.

SUZIE STAPLETON - Solid performer, too many people talking in the background though, Isn't that a little rude though.

CRYSTAL THOMAS & THE FLOWERS OF EVIL - I've enjoyed Crystal live, some great guitar work, although a little loud, maybe this was why Crystal seemed to a little too loud to compete with the guitars.

JAMES McCANN'S DIRTY SKIRT BAND - He has some great song, although they went on a little bit, this was a really long set, and I grew tired, and so to the members of the band, and the keyboardist was seen at the bar on the last couple of songs (possibly a little self indulgent towards the end).

I particularly went to this gig to see The Thod again as was unhappy with there last gig, nothing to do with them but the PA system at there last gig I went to was not the best quality, but I quite surprised with the Revolvers sound system as it was a treat, could hear everything that was going on stage, and there was so much in a 8 piece band. I highly recommend this young band, some great guitar work, and harmonica’s too.

Go-Go Sapien were on fire tonight, very tight, all wearing white, much more impressed than last show I saw them play at Yah Yah's.

Didn't know what I was going to see with Puta Madre Bros, it was a little hard to get a grip with the concept of a 1 man band x 3 (see above picture). They really did rock out to a packed crowd. There bio describes them as one-man-band-triplets of highly fuelled hi-speed knock-em-out mexicano-garage-soul music, but a work mate who came along describe them as Rockin Mariachi.

Jugs of house Draught Beer $10 Jugs, it was ok, cold.

I haven’t been to the Royal Derby for quite some time, and even thought it had closed down. I think last time I’ve been there was in 2000 to whack some balls around on the pool table.

I enjoyed listening to the Thod material, believe it was a pre release CD that I got, but the PA system didn’t do them any justice, maybe the PA was set to loud, and the band couldn’t hear themselves. I also wasn’t a fan of the stage as the wooden partition (something you might see in a restaurant separating tables) seem to box the 8 piece band in.

The last band that I saw reminded me of early 90’s music, take a little from the Stone Roses and some other band I can’t remember. This band didn’t interest me, but the crowd seem to swell to watch them play.

The outside area was packed, even though it was cold, with plenty of smokers and non-smokers, enjoying a conversation where you could hear each other, remember those?

The Gem in Colingwood has plenty of Elvis pictures, including this clock. Although there were plenty of tables and chairs in the bar area, there wasn't enough places to stand and dance as it got packed fairly quickly.

Another Free gig, which maybe is something I"m getting into. It was fairly quiet at Yah Yahs, but from what I hear picks up after 11.30, when the rock DJ's start playing tunes to fill the floor.

Go Go Sapien play a Psychedelic/Garage/Pop and have enjoyed listening to there recordings, for me this didn't really replicate, but they were really energetic on stage.

I was impressed by The Get Go, played some nice pop garage which took me to another place. Only got to see them play about 4-5 songs, as I had to get the last tram back home. There was a few youngs tools or wankers in the Audience heckling the lead singers eye patch.
