Assassins 88(myspace) were the first band up at the Tru-Mould Warehouse Party, and they are a fun party band, very noisy. The drummer in the back, who you can't really see in this pic, has tape on his mouth and was making some very static noisy vocals to great effect.

Outside people were having there BYO drinks and trying out a sausage from the BBQ.

Above Scott and Charlene’s wedding another pop band, but alot slower and complete chance from Assassins. BoomGates finished the gig off, it was way to packed to get a good pick in, as I was pushed up at the band. They are todays rave band, getting some good reviews from their recent Big Day Out performance, with a member of Eddy Current Suppression Ring. They did remind me of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, a little slower, with some female vocals.

Last pic shows the big crowd out the front, many people probably didn't get in, and plenty of the BYO bottles that had been used and tossed away.

The new band room is very cosy, although there there was trouble with the smell and sweat. The aircon was turned on but the window was still fogged up. Maybe this room could be on the nose come summer. However no poll in the middle of the room was great.

Marf Loaf two peice, great voice and excellent guitarist. Quoabe played some Gothic folk rock, guitar I could hear but his voice was a little muffled. Joseph Liddy and the Skeleton Horse, young band, had some loud rocking tunes mixed in with some quieter moments.

After having a drink at The Fox with the crew at PBSfm, the second stop of the night was at The Gem, watched the band above while drinking a pot of draught (I'll have to check Beat to find out who they are). Then it was off to Yah Yahs to see Hugo Race and The True Spirit play.

Managed to catch support Bad Orchestra(pictured above), but missed out on Celery. Very pleased to catch this band, plenty of guitar, taking you somewhere, with some great female vocals thrown in. Bad Orchestra is a band I would definitely see again and look forward to listening to an album, very dreamy. Spoke to two of the members of the band on the street and they said they had only been together for 6 months, but I thought that they were much tighter than a new act and seemed a little bit more together had some sort of direction, compared to alot of new acts.

Probably the best part of Hugo Race and The True Spirit was the trombone/percussionist (on the left of the picture). He was doing thing with a trumpet/trombone/harb/knobs on that thing that if never seen before.

One thing I didn't get about Yah Yah's this night was the crowd, felt like alot of the crowd weren't meant to be there, and may of been more comfortable in a club or bar on Chapel Street.

Yah Yah's on a Lazy Sunny Sunday (7/2/10) Free

Breadmakers above were a good band that suited the Yah Yah's crate diggers event, nice and dirty 60's garage rock. I went around 3pm, and Yah Yah's was packed with people digging through records, so packed I couldn't get in to have a look, hopefully they'll do this again.

Even though this is not the best picture, I like the guy on the right rocking out.

I know that The Espy has this big history of gigs and people love it, but I don't, not a fan, expensive drinks and this weird vibe. I'm always on edge when I go there, and even to St Kilda. The Espy attracts a wide cross spectrum of society, more than any other pubs, you can find locals, UK backpackers, International Tourists, and people from outer suburbs here.

Thumps up for Candice Monique & The Optics, thumbs down for Backlash Brew, for taking so long to take to the stage and do some tuning mid songs. Didn't manage to Speech De Belle, but was told that she found Backlash Brew playlist on stage and said who's is this, and threw it away.

The night started off at the Hi Fi for the Neko Case gig (the second show, the first was on Thursday). at $55 it was a good price for an international gig. Biggest complaint about the Hi Fi is that it's way too hot, I know the gig was full (sold out) but still every time I've been there, summer or winter the place is way too warm. Neko Case is a great performer, great harmonies and band. The sound was great, I could hear everything, even the pluck of the banjo and slide guitar. At the end of the gig she did a Heart cover Magic Man, and I did feel like yelling out 'now play barracuda'. Melbourne Bitter stubbies were $6.50.

Then we got to Eurotrash at around 12.15 to see Shunda K from Yo Majesty. This was my first time to see a gig here, it was a little strange walking up the sound proofed stairwell. Shunda played with a backing track but was very quick with her lyrics and could hardly tell when she was talking a break in between the rapping. Also the crowd for fairly young, with most of the crowd made up of Anglo Saxon Australians. When Shunda finished the placed went down hill, some spaced out guys on the dance floor and a quick getaway was required. It was well worth the $15.

PRESS RELEASE

It’s last drinks at the Tote. This weekend.

I know it’s sudden. I didn’t plan it to be like that.

I can’t afford to keep fighting Liquor Licensing. The “high risk” conditions they have placed on the Tote’s license make it impossible to trade profitably. I can’t afford the new “high risk” fees they have imposed. I can’t afford to keep fighting them at VCAT. I can’t renegotiate a lease in this environment.

So, come into the Tote this weekend to say farewell to the sad staff and to feel the sticky carpet for the last time.

I don’t believe the Tote is a “high risk” venue, in the same category as the nightclubs that make the news for all the wrong reasons. Despite being on a rough little corner of Collingwood, the Tote has had very, very few incidents. As a local police officer once said, “The Tote’s the quietest pub in the area.” (!).

It’s not dumb luck that the Tote has escaped serious violence. I believe the business has been run responsibly. People don’t come to the Tote to fight. They come because they have a passion for music and love to be in an historic venue that reeks of that same passion.

The Tote is (sorry, was) an important cornerstone of Melbourne’s rich and diverse music community. It’s too late to save the Tote but not too late to try and save other inner city venues that are feeling the same pressures.

I know the sudden closure affects a lot of people. Most importantly, the hard-working staff that are being forced onto the dole queue. And the bands and artists that have had their gigs pulled from under them.

Anyway, I don’t want to get maudlin (or viciously angry). The era of the Tote is over. If you love the place, come and have a beer with us this weekend.

To tell you the truth I nearly forgot about this gig, and just realized I hadn't posted anything on it, as I really use this site to document gig I see in Melbourne. I didn't get to see Miniature Submarines(from Melbourne) so no comments on them, did see Panel of Judges but they did not hold my interested and left to talk to mates in the bar.

The crowd flooded in when the Vivian Girls started, full of all the young and trendies who inhabit Northcote. They did rock, some great moments of instrumentals, but why does this all feel like a dream, maybe I'm to occupied with other matters.

Dollsquad was very cool, with there rock, leather clad, all girl group, felt very fresh with comparison to Tim Rogers outfit The Gung Hoes. The Gung Hoes are made up of Tim Rogers, Davey Lane, Pete Satchell (Dallas Crane) and Evan Richards (Cold Harbour). Yah Yah's filled up with punters wanting to here Tim new outfit, although I know a few people that got bored and went across the road to see cool new kids play some new music (see the bellow poster).

Did a little venue hop on Wednesday 9/9/09.

Bar Open had IN BETWEEN WORDS: readings & performances, covers of songs by The Triffids & David McComb. I this gig I managed to see Blackeyed Susans Trio and Single Men’s Drinking Club. Both were very good. Single Men's drinking Club did this great cover of a Triffids song that I don't know the name, but it started with spoken word then went all prog rock. The old problem I find with Bar Open is that there are too many seats, hard to walk around in the dark then bumping into one, and way too many people. I was sweating like it was 40c in summer and make it even more annoying people all around me were breaking wind, which made me run out of the Blackeyed Susans Trio to take cover.

After that went to the Birmingham and caught last song by Into the Woods and a full set by The Thod.
Later went to see the thod, young kids who have small turn outs to there gigs. This was the third time that I have seen them play, for a small venue the sound was good, a very much relaxed gig, with a few of the band members sitting on the tiny stage, also the princible tamorinist cracks me up with his campy banter.

CRYSTAL THOMAS & THE FLOWERS OF EVIL - I've enjoyed Crystal live, some great guitar work, although a little loud, maybe this was why Crystal seemed to a little too loud to compete with the guitars.

JAMES McCANN'S DIRTY SKIRT BAND - He has some great song, although they went on a little bit, this was a really long set, and I grew tired, and so to the members of the band, and the keyboardist was seen at the bar on the last couple of songs (possibly a little self indulgent towards the end).

I particularly went to this gig to see The Thod again as was unhappy with there last gig, nothing to do with them but the PA system at there last gig I went to was not the best quality, but I quite surprised with the Revolvers sound system as it was a treat, could hear everything that was going on stage, and there was so much in a 8 piece band. I highly recommend this young band, some great guitar work, and harmonica’s too.

Go-Go Sapien were on fire tonight, very tight, all wearing white, much more impressed than last show I saw them play at Yah Yah's.

Didn't know what I was going to see with Puta Madre Bros, it was a little hard to get a grip with the concept of a 1 man band x 3 (see above picture). They really did rock out to a packed crowd. There bio describes them as one-man-band-triplets of highly fuelled hi-speed knock-em-out mexicano-garage-soul music, but a work mate who came along describe them as Rockin Mariachi.

I haven’t been to the Royal Derby for quite some time, and even thought it had closed down. I think last time I’ve been there was in 2000 to whack some balls around on the pool table.

I enjoyed listening to the Thod material, believe it was a pre release CD that I got, but the PA system didn’t do them any justice, maybe the PA was set to loud, and the band couldn’t hear themselves. I also wasn’t a fan of the stage as the wooden partition (something you might see in a restaurant separating tables) seem to box the 8 piece band in.

The last band that I saw reminded me of early 90’s music, take a little from the Stone Roses and some other band I can’t remember. This band didn’t interest me, but the crowd seem to swell to watch them play.

The outside area was packed, even though it was cold, with plenty of smokers and non-smokers, enjoying a conversation where you could hear each other, remember those?

Another Free gig, which maybe is something I"m getting into. It was fairly quiet at Yah Yahs, but from what I hear picks up after 11.30, when the rock DJ's start playing tunes to fill the floor.

Go Go Sapien play a Psychedelic/Garage/Pop and have enjoyed listening to there recordings, for me this didn't really replicate, but they were really energetic on stage.

I was impressed by The Get Go, played some nice pop garage which took me to another place. Only got to see them play about 4-5 songs, as I had to get the last tram back home. There was a few youngs tools or wankers in the Audience heckling the lead singers eye patch.

I was really captivated by Sean McMahon, who played an acoustic guitar and sometimes used a harmonica. He reminded me a little of the eals.

I just rocked up to miss out on The Zebras who were said to be, by my friend, to have a Smiths sound.

The Crayon Fields were ok again, short sweet indie pop tunes, lead singer sometimes has annoying banter. I’ve seen them so many times I think I’ve lost all my feelings for them, if that makes any sense.

JE SUIS ANIMAL had some sweet female vocals, they reminded of Stereo Lab, but more pop, with tastes of 80’s Indie and 60’s psychedelica.

I think there playing again on the 27th of June at The Edinburgh Castle, I wonder if this will be a charged gig, Edinburgh Castle often has some nice free gig’s for a great little pub venue in the front bar.

I was really disappointed that Dexter didn't play.
When Africa Hi-Tech Sound System it was really packed upstairs, go barely move, heaps of music like nerds that were probably taking it a little to serious. It was great how down stairs had up stairs pumping through the speakers, as here was a little more room to move.

Qua was very hypnotic, 2 piece, Laptop, Synth, Electronic Drums and Sampler/Loop machine(I think)
Ratatat had some great guitar riffs and visuals, with plenty of electronic beats and samples.
I was up the front for most of it, but couldn’t stand it, seams that all the f*** heads are up the front, they tend to get a little overexcited, pushy, violent to others, and all the mellow people who would like to have a non intrusive dance stand up the back.

Ventured into the Old Bar on Friday to see Richie play with his band the Brides of Christ. Did happen to hear a little of Howl at the Moon, very tight and Toot Toot Toot, very challenging.

Richie was really intense on stage, really getting into the moment, dancing into the crowd. Also the guitar was really tight, and the whole band too.

I have like what I heard from a Yacht CD that I was given but live they sung(or seemed like) over a backing track or music from a computer. At the start they had a little slide show and didn't mind some of the video loops they had going in the background.

Streetparty DJ wasn't too bad playing a lot of hit good and bad, from what I remember going from Salt n Peppers 'Push It' to 'Pop Corn' to the Pixies 'Debaser'.

CSS was quite different in contrast compare to Yacht as they are a full band, which was a big change for the night. I really like there energy they had on stage. Probably went for around an hour including an encore.

This may be old news but The Rob Roy has new owners and will be renamed 'Newtown Workers Club' which I don't get as it's in Fitzroy maybe the Fitzroy Workers Club would be a better name. The new owner is Jerome Borazio, the man behind St Jerome's, Sister Bella and Happy Palace. From what I read in the Age on Monday, it will be more of a restaurant and have some gigs later at night. Hopefully this will not be like what happen to the Punters turning into Bimbo Deluxe.

Potts of Carlton Draught $4 and Cascade Light Stubies $7(whats with that?)

Brown Alley or as I like to say the Pub on the Corner of King and Lonsdale Street, where sometimes you enter via Brown Alley. I really don’t know why this place is called Brown Alley, apart from this back door entry; it seems like some sort of gimmick.

At the start as I walked in I really felt like the odd man out as it was really clubby, and I don’t really do the club scene. A lot of people were out of it, very much a bunch of slow disco dancing zombies.

I was really disappointed by the bad sound of Brown Alley, it seemed to have way to much base, which meant the music lost a lot of it subtle qualities.

Platinum Pied Pipers, were good, the sound didn’t do them justice. They were a modern rhythm and blues type band, but from the future. Also they had a backing tape of female’s singers which would have been great to have live. Also would of like to see them in another venue, such as Northcote Social Club or even the Thornbury Theatre.

Giles Peterson played an eclectic range of tunes playing a hug array of music from Jazz, Soul, Drum’n’Bass, twostep, reggae, disco and other mind boggle sounds. I was a little scared of the MC that came with Giles, that he was going to be being a saw thumb by doing some awkward shout outs and singer, but he seemed to fit in, or maybe this was due to the bad sound. Giles went over an 1 or was it close to 2 hour and was worth the $50 odd dollars entry.

Before I forget, I better mention cup Eve at the Tote. If your not from Melbourne town, we(some of us) have a day off at the start November for a horse race that stops a nation.

I can't remember the name of the first band but they were rocking. Second band in the lineup was Subaudible Hum from Melbourne, who reminded me of bands like The Doves and Radio Head, very prog rock.

The headlining act was James McCann and The Dirty Skirt Band who were very captivating, sprawling, epic and moving. I was very tired, but they kept me fixated to there sound.

I’ve been a little slack with posting this gig, back a couple of weeks ago, on the 18th of October I had the privilege to see a 15 piece super girl group The Rebelles’, and don’t forgot the 4 piece band that backed them up. Me mind is a little fuzzy but one of the songs they closed with was Da Doo Ron Ron. It was a really huge sound and they somehow managed to fit them all into Ya Yas. They were really a fresh piece of air with there Girl Group sounds.

There next show is at the Tote on the 27th of November with Ikochi (Tokyo) and Dollsquad (Melbourne).

For the record I wont go as it's small cramped place where you have to hang around with people trying to be cool or should I say people who are there to been seen. Remember that 80's flick Electric Dreams? This so reminds me of that film, although The Sun Blindness is more guitar than Eighties Synth, Bachelorette(from NZ) is very Pop.Synth, so that wont disappoint. And Tongue and Teeth(from here Melbourne Town) from what I've herd is very mellow guitar work with some smooth female vocals(don't listen to this as I am very inacurate).

I think SDS started playing first, who I gather are a new act, four piece from Melbourne. I quickly came to a conclusion they were Grunge, not really punk or rock. But an Epic Experimental Grunge. The first song they played was a great instrumental, but I thought the singing wasn't too polished.

When I first heard the above track I thought of Frans Ferdinand but they list some of there influences on there MySpace as At the drive-in, The Killers, The Strokes and Interpol, and could even here a tad of Joy Division. Unfortunately I only got to here a couple of songs by Fire Fire! and then had to leave, so I also missed out on Little Killing.

I ventured down to Ya Ya's on Saturday to see a free double set by Dave Graney & The Lurid Yellow Mist, (with only Dave, Clare More & Bassist).

I liked the venue with its high ceilings. Also Got me thinking that there are a few venues around that area of Smith Street in Collingwood. The crowd was fairly mix with people mostly over 25 years. Only thing that annoying was the punters consistent chatter while they were playing.

They mixed up the set with mostly new material of the new album and some old ones. I did enjoy hearing Clare and the Bassist sing and harmonizing with Dave.

Just found this email advising me that Gary Numan will be touring next year with his full UK light show and electrifying live performance. I've seen some great gig's at the Forum but is this big enough for Gary and Band?

As you can see with the above picture I aint no cool guy, as this is a cheap double CD, which I purchased back in the 90's for only $14.95. The Pleasure Principle which is on this Double, was released in late 1979 as has been very influential, but forget about that he's just looks cool being some sort of human robot creature.

Do you shell out for something like this, he hasn't toured here since 1980. Please someone send me a free ticket.

Just got the heads up on this upcomming gig, The Adrian Belew Power Trio will be touring Australia and playing at the Corner hotel on Wednesday 3rd of December. Adrian is a self-proclaimed ‘stunt guitarist’ and has performed with the likes of Frank Zappa “Sheik Yerbouti”; David Bowie on “Lodger”; Talking Heads on “Remain In Light”; and on the Tom Tom Club “Tom Tom Club”, just to name a few. He got plenty of MP3 samples to get a glimpse as to what to expect. Adrian will be supported by Penny Ikinger at the Melbourne gig.

Harlequin League - Bones

I often dream at night and wish there would be a band that would come out and be as cool as the Human League in Melbourne town, but alas this will never happen. But when I see the words Synth in a lineup of instruments I'll take a second look. The Harlequin League have a Synth in the lineup, and upon loading there myspace page you are greeted with a track called Again and Again, which may get the kids dancing along to this Synth/Rock Tune, but skip this tracks and listen to Itchy Heart which is much more of a catchier tune and some experimental aliments. I can hear some sounds that remind me of the likes of Stone Roses, Janes Addiction and even a modern act Kasabian (but they don't have the big sound like them). The above track is a little strong but still worth a listen.

They also have a gig coming up at the Corner also with End Of Fashion & The Seabellies on this Friday 5th September.

Melbourne based accoustic roots singer songwriter Liz Stringer will be releasing her second album 'Pendulum' and has also announced some gigs around Australia. In Melbourne she will be playing at The Toff in Town on Saturday 16th August and the Broad Festival at Hammer Hall on Friday 29th of August.

I'm not a big fan of the roots music but look into those eyes, so hypnotic.

It took awhile to actually get into the gig, with complicated numbering system on the doors. I thought that this would make things run a little smoothly but most people were confused, maybe they need to employ a few roaming people to assist with confused.

Also upon entering you get frisked, I haven't been to Festival Hall since the early 00's but felt it was very 90's. And the joke is really on them, most people have mobile, which can generally take good pictures and some mobiles out there can take some good/medium level video, so why not ban people from taking in there mobiles. Also the vibe in Festival Hall felt like were all just cattle led in for some sensible entertainment, and this is probably why I avoid going there.

So while waiting to get in Eddy Current played, they sounded good outside. Regurgitator was a real flash back to the 90's, they sounded very flat, and I do prefer they studio work to there live. Last time I saw them play was also at Festival Hall, possibly back in 1999 or 2000 playing after TISM, which also didn't do too much for them, as TISM have very good stage show. It also annoyed me that they did multiple thanks to Devo and Devo are up next calls, just play the music, we all know who the main act are, once is enough.

My mate was fairly pumped to see Devo, I was very weary, didn't want to get disappointed. Some guy that was behind was very excited, he said he was around 40 and seemed to be his only night of the year to be let out of the house. He was nut's, nearly started a fight with this other nerd next to him, and spitting on everyone when he sang along. Later in the show we pushed him forward, although I felt sorry as he started to do some sexy dance with a lady. Although he try to dance with me early on, which was weird, but I managed to stop it with some crafty robot dancing.

Devo were good, they weren't mediocre or mind blowing but just good. Very tight with everything, a few video clips thrown in, and a couple of costume changes. The last song they played was beautiful world with a twist, I think he was called Boogie Boy, this was a real disappointment, I love the original, but singing it with a high pitch voice was annoying and horrible not ironic and funny.

On Saturday night I managed to see a couple of bands play at the Birmingham Hotel, which I would never have gone before, due to a skin head violent vibe it had going. But now under new management is more likened to the young Indie crowd that is sweeping the nation, well it's more akin to a place you'd find in the CBD.

The Sharks, They Bite!, Cry Mercy, Cast & Crew and Damn Terran. I was lucky enough to see Cry Mercy and Cast & Crew.

Cry Mercy was real rocky, doing some great instrumentals.

Cast & Crew had more of a pop slant, something you could dance to, maybe even do the robot if inclined. Looking forwarding to hearing and seeing more of these two bands.

Going by there myspace James plays guitars, laptop, viola, bass, zither, vocals, recorders, effects, percussion, piano, ondes martenot synth (AS French Connection and Spawn System), banjo mandolin, mellotron, baritone ukulele. And Jess does vocals, guitars, bass, laptop, recorders, soprano and baritone ukuleles, and other instruments.

There website has a couple of sample MP3, that only go for half or less of the song, this is fairly frustrating as when you start getting into a track it just finishes. But they have there myspace witch seems to have the full tracks up and on JJJ unearthed also has full tracks, which is where I got the below from.

Georgia Fields and Her Mini-Indie-Orchestra with The Hazelman Brothers and Ben Manijsama are playing Manchester Lane on the 24th. The Hazelman Brothers track above is a melow number, I believe it's about an Aus Music festival called Meredith. The above Georgia remind me of Tori Amos but I don't know about the who Mini Indie Orchestra, a little too cute or contrived, but what is indie music these days.

Richie from Stone Love at PBSfm is doing this Soul, Disco, Hip Hop and Rock Night at the Horn in Collingwood (20 Johnston St, Collingwood, btwn smith and wellington) every 2nd and 4th Friday night after 9pm. Haven't been there yet but am looking for a new soul night as Cherry is not open anymore and there is know where to get my grove on.

Some where along my trip around the interweb I found The Greenmatics(Space). They are an Electro Pop New Wave three piece that use vocals, synths, bass and drums to create music.

Unfortunately I missed them playing at Roxanne, due to there myspace stating they were playing at Revolver on the 2nd of August, then I check it again and that gig is longer there and found they just played.

This could be worth a listen Here She Goes Again(Melbourne based) is having an EP launch at the Toff in town $10. They claim to be an Italian indie/pop/rock/psychedelic trio, but also I can here 60's garage and some Sonic Youth in there, check out the track at the bottom.

Also they are supported by The Dead South and Black Pony express.

Coming out of Hobart in Tasmania Viva computer are playing a few gigs around Melbourne town this weekend.
